Springtime in Lakeland

by @ 8:24 pm. Filed under Andrew Hess

Hello friends and welcome back to wonderful world of professional baseball. Following my return home from Hawaii I was able to put the baseball down for a while and enjoy the off time. There was still some excitement however as I got engaged to my long time girlfriend, Amanda, at the end of January. We both agree that my advancement in the system now is a good thing and if I should be so fortunate to make it to Detroit we don’t need to be picky about finding a cheap photographer for the wedding. So, after my time in cold, snowy Michigan, I found myself once again back in Tigertown ready, once again, to tackle a whole new season of challenges and experiences.
I took the long road down to spring training this year and that long road being I-75. Yes one highway the entire time. I did make a pit stop for the night in Atlanta to see one of my old college roommates and save some money on the way. You see, you have the option to fly or drive, however if you fly, you only get a plane ticket. If you drive though, the organization will pay you, and so the more you save on the way, the more you pocket upon arrival. Now folks you can understand why us players go through such travel torture; the almighty dollar.
Once I arrived in Lakeland I checked into the Tigertown dorms and began the process of settling and aimlessly wandering around to see where all the people I know are. After finding a few of my teammates from last year I felt like I was back where I belonged. Just yesterday my roommate arrived in the form of our 1st baseman with the Whitecaps, Chris Carlson. We also have our room all ready to handle the demands of keeping us entertained in the downtime: Nintendo Wii, check. Two TVs, check. Playstation 3, check.
Now that everything is in place to start playing, there is only one thing left; the rest of the position players to actually play games (they report next week). That’s all for now, but I do have a conditioning test tomorrow so there should be plenty more to talk about. It is great to be back and I hope everyone is looking forward to another season.
