The Whitecaps took a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth but when the dust settled, they took a 6-5 loss because of a rough outing by Melvin Mercedes. He was credited with four runs on three hits and a walk in just 1/3 of an inning. Jose Ortega actually gave up the hit that scored the winning run for South Bend.
Avisail Garcia went four for five with two RBIs and a run. Alexis Espinoza went four for four with two doubles, a walk and two runs.
Trevor Feeney improved to 1-0 with a solid start in the White Caps 3-2 win over Fort Wayne. Feeney gave up a pair of runs on five hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings. Melvin Mercedes pitched a shutout ninth and he picked up his second save of the season.
Jordan Lennerton went two for three with a run and an RBI. Luis Salas went two for four with an RBI.
The White Caps suppressed a late inning surge by Fort Worth to win 4-3. Giovany Sota had a fantastic start in which he struck out ten. He gave up just one run on two hits and a walk in five innings. Melvin Mercedes threw a shutout ninth and he picked up his first save of the season.

Melvin Mercedes had 16 saves and a 1.82 ERA in 24 2/3 innings for the GCL Tigers but he’s had a tough time since getting promoted to the Whitecaps. He made his second appearance yesterday and he gave up (with some help from Tyler Stohr, three runs in the bottom of the eighth and he was tagged with the loss. It’s too bad because a decent start by Luke Putkonen went to waste. He gave up an unearned run on three hits and four walks with three strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.
Gustavo Nunez went two for four with a triple and a run. Ron Bourquin went two for four with a double, a run and an RBI.
Zach Samuels improved to 2-2 on the season with a really nice start in the GCL Tigers 3-0 win over the GCL Pirates. He gave up six hits and a walk with four strikeouts in seven shutout innings. Melvin Mercedes pitched a shutout ninth and he picked up his sixteenth save of the season.
James Robbins went three for four with an RBI. Elvin Soto went three for four with a home run and two RBIs.
Rayni Guichardo improved to 4-4 on the season with a really nice start in the GCL Tigers 1-0 win over the GCL Blue Jays. He gave up three hits and three walks with five strikeouts in six shutout innings. Melvin Mercedes threw a shutout ninth and he picked up his fifteenth save of the season.
Brett Anderson led the way at the plate and he went two for four and he scored the lone run of the game. Luis Castillo singled, drew a walk and drove in the lone run.
Alexander Nunez had a nice day at the plate in the GCL Tigers 6-3 win over the GCL Phillies. He went two for four with a triple, a home run, two RBIs and two runs. Jordan Cruz singled twice, scored two runs and drove in one.
Rayni Guichardo improved to 3-4 with a decent start. He gave up three runs on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts in six innings. Melvin Mercedes pitched a shutout ninth and he picked up his thirteenth save of the season.
Giovany Soto improved to 1-0 on the season with a solid start in the GCL Tigers 2-1 win over the GCL Yankees. He gave up just one unearned run on two hits and two walks with three strikeouts in six innings. Melvin Mercedes struck out two in a shutout ninth and he picked up his eleventh save of the season.
Eddie Rush was the hitting star in the win. He went two for four with a double, a walk and a run. Jordan Cruz doubled, drove in one and scored.

The GCL Tigers scored an eighth inning run and that proved to be the difference in their 3-2 win over the GCL Yankees. The game winner was a triple by Jordan Cruz that scored Patrick McKenna. Alexander Nunez also had a nice day at the plate and he went two for four with a double and a run.

Robert Diaz picked up the win and he improved to 2-1 with 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief. Melvin Mercedes struck out one in a shutout ninth and he picked up his fourth save.
The GCL Yankees and GCL Tigers split shutouts today as they made up a rain out. The GCL Tigers were on the losing end of a 3-0 game in the first one. Bruce Rondon gave up two runs on four hits and three walks with five strikeouts in four innings and he dropped to 0-1. The hitters managed only four hits and all four were singles.
Game two went a lot better and it was a 1-0 win. Marcos Nunez improved to 1-0 with three innings of shutout relief while Melvin Mercedes pitched a shutout ninth to pick up his third save of the season. Jordan Cruz was the hitting star and he went two for three with two doubles and a run.
The GCL Tigers trailed for most of this game until they rallied for six runs in the top of the seventh inning to give them a 7-4 win. Elvin Soto went two for four with a double and an RBI while Luis Castillo went two for five with a run.
Marcos Nunez picked up the win although he was kind of the right place at the right time because he gave up two of the four Phillies run. Melvin Mercedes threw a shutout ninth and he picked up save number one.
