Detroit Tigers Minor League Baseball Commentary and Analysis

The latest Tigers prospect list comes from Kevin Goldstein, who goes eleven prospects deep. Once again, Jacob Turner tops the list and he’s the lone five star prospect. He projects him to make his debut in 2012 but there’s already news that Leyland may take a look at him this year a la Rick Porcello. With the Brad Penny signing though, I find it unlikely that he makes the big league roster. Still, he had a solid season as a 19 year old and he had a very strong finish. This kid is a stud and I’m looking forward to seeing how he progresses this year.
Number two is the Tigers top pick in 2010, Nick Castellanos. He’ll get his feet wet out in Grand Rapids and you could be looking at the heir apparent at third base in the future. Goldstein’s biggest concern with him is he doesn’t stick at third and ends up in a mix of first basemen where he’ll lose some value.
Number three is Andy Oliver, who already has pitched for the big league team. If the Tigers ship Armando Galarraga out of town, Oliver is probably next in line for a rotation spot but he’ll probably pitch most of the season with Toledo. Chance Ruffin (could be close despite only having a stint in the AFL) and Dan Schlereth (major league ready) round out the top five.
